A career shaped by curiosity about human potential, healing & transformation.

For more than two decades, my work has followed a question that continues to deepen:

What allows human beings to move through profound experiences—not only to recover, but to be transformed by them?

That question has taken me through childbirth and maternal mental health, psychotherapy, trauma and attachment, nervous-system regulation, altered states of consciousness, and psychedelic-assisted therapy.

What once looked like separate chapters of my career, I now understand as one evolving body of work.

PSYCHOTHERAPIST. AUTHOR. EDUCATOR.

I'm Jennifer Summerfeldt, MACP, CCC—a psychotherapist, educator, author, and creator of the Flowing Fears Process™.

My work sits at the intersection of psychotherapy and human transformation, informed by more than 20 years of experience across maternal and perinatal mental health, childbirth, trauma, attachment, nervous-system-informed practice, and altered states of consciousness.

I am the author of Healing After Birth and Midwifery for the Soul, and my current professional interests include childbirth-informed perinatal mental health, psychedelic-assisted therapy, practitioner education, curriculum development, and research.

MY STORY

My curiosity about human potential began long before I became a psychotherapist.

My early studies in kinesiology and performance psychology introduced me to the psychology of human performance—how our thoughts, beliefs, emotions and internal states can shape what becomes possible when we are under pressure or reaching toward something beyond our current capacity.

That curiosity eventually led me into the world of childbirth, where questions of human capacity took on an entirely different depth.

For more than two decades, my professional life has included childbirth education, doula work, maternal support and two direct-entry midwifery apprenticeships. Birth showed me something that would profoundly shape the work I do today: human beings move through extraordinary experiences at the intersection of biology, psychology, relationship, identity, meaning and altered states of consciousness.

It also taught me that our most challenging experiences cannot always be understood through symptoms alone. They can become places of injury and suffering—but they can also become thresholds for profound transformation.

I later completed my Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology and moved more deeply into clinical work, studying trauma, attachment, nervous-system regulation, somatic approaches, mindfulness and parts-oriented therapies.

Over time, I became increasingly curious about why people could develop enormous insight into themselves—and still find themselves returning to the same stressful thoughts, emotional reactions and protective patterns.

That inquiry eventually gave rise to the Flowing Fears Process™—an integrative, nervous-system-informed process for uncovering the fear, beliefs and protective patterns beneath present-day activation and creating the conditions for a different way of being.

More recently, my training in psychedelic-assisted therapy and my exploration of non-ordinary states of consciousness have brought me back to something childbirth first taught me decades ago: some human experiences ask us to move beyond pathology and become curious about transformation itself.

Today, these threads no longer feel like separate careers.

They are one body of work.
